Thomas Hung is a Hong Kong-native cellist whose career spans as a soloist, chamber musician, orchestra musician, and an educator. He has performed extensively across Asia, Europe, and North America, and is known for his musical clarity and stylistic versatility.
Hung has partnered with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra on numerous occasions, contributing to a diverse range of performances and musical projects. As a soloist, he has appeared with the HK Phil and featured in the inaugural concert of the Greater Bay Area Youth Orchestra. He was also invited as a soloist for the first Academy Cello Festival, where he gave the Hong Kong premieres of works by several contemporary composers. Beyond his solo engagements, he is a dedicated chamber musician who collaborates regularly with international artists from diverse cultural backgrounds.
An active soloist, Hung has performed frequently with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and participated in the debut concert of the Greater Bay Area Youth Orchestra. He was also invited as a soloist at the inaugural Academy Cello Festival, where he gave the Hong Kong premieres of works by several contemporary composers. Alongside his solo engagmenets, he devotes himself to chamber music, regularly partnering with diverse musicians worldwide to expand his artistic vision.
Hung’s musical foundation was established at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, where he completed his undergraduate studies. He later pursued graduate degrees at the Yale School of Music and the New England Conservatory of Music. His artistic development has been guided by some of the most distinguished musicians of our time, including Yo-Yo Ma, Jian Wang, David Finckel, Paul Watkins, Lluís Claret, and Ray Wang.
Hung’s achievements have been recognized with notable honours, including Commendation from the Hong Kong Home Affairs Bureau, the Harriet Gibbs Fox Memorial Prize from Yale University, the Bernard van Zuiden Music Prize, and scholarships from the Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund. Alongside his stage career, Hung is actively engaged in music education. He serves on the cello faculty of the HKAPA Junior Music Programme, where he focuses on building robust technical foundations and nurturing independent musical thinking in the next generation of musicians through long-term pedagogical engagement.
From the 2025/26 season, Hung joins the Macao Orchestra. Alongside his orchestral commitments, he continues to engage with audiences through performances that seek a genuine balance between tradition and a distinct artistic voice.
